Botox for Hemifacial Spasm
Hemifacial spasm is an involuntary contraction of the facial and eyelid muscles. It usually occurs on one side of the face. This may be caused by irritation of the facial nerve (7th cranial nerve) in the brain.
Treatment is required if it is severe and becomes socially unacceptable or when it affects one's vision. This involves a subcutaneous injection of botulinum toxin to about 7 to 8 sites on the face, thus relaxing the offending muscles. The effect usually lasts between 3 to 6 months and may require re-injections if the condition recurs.
